Hello Kitty Coins - Full Global List

I have a perverse fascination for Hello Kitty, the branding mascot owned by Sanrio Co., Ltd.

I don't need to collect anything with her visage on it, but I am fascinated by how Japan (and many other countries) have a need to place the mascot upon everything sellable.

Who am I to argue with success? It works.

On this page are various currency coins made NOT as mere tokens, but rather as full on legal tender. Truthfully, many are made as collectibles, as is evidenced by a limited circulation, but some are not.

It took me over four hours to compile this list, mostly because there is not a single place on the internet where all the information can be found as single source. Until now. I have no idea why I think that that is important, except that I do.

Let's look at the real deal legal tender first.

Euro - France - 2005
Known as the Hello Kitty Visits Paris set.
These are all legal tender coins, but were struck as commemorative coins by Monnaie de Paris, which is a state of France-owned industrial and commercial company. Two are gold, the rest are silver.

The €50.00 coin is known as Hello Kitty and Daniel In Versailles. Hello Kitty and her friend Daniel, dressed up in prestigious clothes are dancing in the hall of mirror of the Chateau de Versailles.

Cook Islands Coinage - 2004, 30th Anniversary of Hello Kitty

The Cook Islands is an island country in the South Pacific Ocean in free association with New Zealand. It comprises 15 islands whose total land area is 240 square kilometers. Tourism is its main industry, ahead of off-shore banking, pearls and marine and fruit exports. It also makes a bit of money from its commemorative coin production.

The Cook Islands coins (its own legal tender) and the SILVER Hello Kitty commemorative coins are actually manufactured by the New Zealand Mint.

However, the Hello Kitty commemorative GOLD coins are actually minted by the Swissmint in Berne, Switzerland.

There are a few more legal tender coins:

30th Anniversary of Hello Kitty - Japan coin set

This one is just a Hello Kitty theme, featuring the standard Japanese coins for 2004. Along with the graphics in the display case, there is one Hello Kitty medallion perched in the middle - I hesitate to call it a coin, because it has no actual legal tender value, except for the collector.

There are other coins featuring Hello Kitty, but they not legal tender commemorative coins, but are rather medallions.

If you know of any other Hello Kitty legal tender coins - shoot the information my way.

Andrew Joseph

    1. No idea... but I would assume you can buy and sell them on E-Bay. I have used E-Bay to buy and sell many things for 10 years without a single problem.
