What You Need To Know About Bukkake

Let's talk about bukkake. Come again? Exactly.

This is a frank blog discussion about the ins and outs of sex and sex-related actions, so please adjust your reading methods accordingly. I have kept the language clean, but perhaps the subject matter is not to everyone's... taste.

Bukkake (ぶっかけ - pronounced boo-ka-kay) is a sex act that involved multiple men ejaculating on the face of a woman or another man.

Originating in Japan in AV (adult video) films back in the mid-1980s with men covering women with their goo, it has since spread around the world and into gay porn, while maintaining its Japanese descriptive term.

The reason it came about, however, was a a means of circumventing Japan's very strange censorship laws.

For the unaware, in Japan when showing genitals, they must be pixelated - digitally blurred - so the viewer can't see the action. It's why, Japanese porn focuses more on the pained face of the actress rather than on the naughty bits. I have noticed this, and don't care for it.

I will tell you that you can get uncensored Japanese AV porn, but it's illegal in Japan. Of course, the uncensored stuff seemed more available than the censored stuff - and we are talking 1990-1993 when I was in Japan as an interested viewer.

Anyhow, since filmmakers could not legally show penetration (oral, vaginal or anal) without it being blurred, they needed to find a way around the laws. They did.

Semen is not censored in Japan. You can show as much of the stuff as you like. There's the censorship law's loophole.

So… even if a lot of the AV might depict blurred fornication, the finish could always be outside the body, and visible.

The whole concept isn't anything new, as the pornographic industries of other nations have been showing external ejaculation—the so-called 'money shot'—for years, to more or less prove to the viewer that there is a happy ending.

Bukkake is different, however, in that it involves multiple men:
  • standing around and either taking a poke at a female or two and then ejaculating on their face(s);
  • seeking oral pleasure from the women (one after another) before depositing a load on their face, or ;
  • simply standing around masturbating only to loosen their load upon the woman's face.
It has to be the face, by the way. Load after load after load on the face. That's bukkake.

When double penetration (DP) started coming unto its own in the early 1990s, and gangbang in the late 1990s—in the global porn industry—having more people in your AV movie means higher costs for the producer.

AV actresses get paid more than the male members, but they (and Japan) realized with bukkake you only had to pay ONE female actress, and you could pretty much have all the men pay you to be one of the guys in the film—suffice to say, in reality, the pay is decidedly less.

Biggest differences in bukkake movies created in Japan versus elsewhere?

Elsewhere, the women in the movies all seem to be enjoying themselves as they are splattered upon—smiling, licking lips... it seems pleasurable.

In Japan, the women always looks like they have been forced into this position… like it was against their will… showing once again the mastery of the Japanese male over the Japanese woman. I'm being sarcastic when I say stuff like this.

The woman in the Japanese AV flick is almost always dressed up as a high school girl (think Sailor Moon outfit) or as an office lady (the OL is a known Japanese term for the female clerks in businesses—exceeding retail)—it's part of the Japanese fantasy.

(That whole Japanese fantasy seems pretty piss-poor limited if you ask me—high school girl and OL? That's it? What about the nurse? The prisoner? The soccer mom? These aren't any of my fantasies, but I'm just asking where the imagination is in Japanese porn.)

The word bukakke comes from (sorry, I'll get you a towel) the Japanese word "bukkakeru (ぶっ掛ける - which means to sprinkle water)". Bukkake is the noun form.

For you grammar bitches out there:
The compound verb can be broken down into a prefix and a verb: butsu (ぶつ) and kakeru (掛ける). Butsu is a prefix derived from the verb "buchi" which literally means to hit but the usage of the prefix is a verb-intensifier. Kakeru in this context means to shower or pour. The word bukkake is often used in Japanese to describe pouring out water with sufficient momentum to cause splashing or spilling.

And if that doesn't turn your crank, let's see if we can spoil your appetite: the term bukkake is used to describe any Japanese meal where hot broth is poured over noodles, as in bukkake udon and bukkake soba.

Go ahead - slurp up your noodles.

Now, here's the thing… while most viewers of porn can certainly understand why Japan's spunky AV industry using a loophole to show an ejaculation—but why utilize multiple ejaculations?

My initial reaction would be to maintain Japanese male dominance over its women

That means that while humiliating, I don't believe that is what the men ejaculating seek to do. It's to make the men feel empowered… that the women are nothing more than playthings for men.

That is what the viewer of bukkake movies gets out of it.

I really do think there is a difference between needing to humiliate women and making the male seem stronger—but I am sure they are two sides of the same coin. Keep in mind, however, 99.9% of the time, each side is different.

Men are not watching bukkake to see women humiliated as much as they are watching to see man dominate over a woman (imaging ones own self to be all of those men).

Now… I have said that the Japanese AV movies involving bukkake seem to involve subjugation… rape, even or group rape, as the case seems.

The sexual well-being of the woman is not considered.

"How do you make a woman have an orgasm?"
"Who the hell cares?!"

It's jokes like that that weird me out. In my 20s and 30s, I had actually been out with women who said they had never had an orgasm until I showed them what for. Sad but true. Even female ejaculation. Tsk-tsk. Men aren't doing what they should be doing.

Holy crap… a psychology lesson! Granted… it's just an opinion and is not based on anything I know for fact.

Japanese women often scream "itai (pain)" during intercourse—real and pretend, which I have always thought was to make the Japanese mail feel more like a brute regardless of actual penetrating power or motion in the ocean.

I don't recall any of the Japanese women I was with actually screaming that out except when I had my knee on their hair. I heard different, more real things that ensured I was doing things properly for all concerned.

Lastly, there is a specialty genre of bukkake (that I know of - I'm sure there are many more), known as gokkun.

Gokkun involves multiple men ejaculating into a cup or glass—that's normal, right?—and then having the woman drink and swallow it.

Bukkake is odd, when it comes to sex… usually the ejaculation is the end of sex, and it's nap time, but with bukkake, the ejaculation isn't the end… the climax is watching the woman covered in sticky stuff.

Different strokes for different folks.

Did you know that in January 2001, the Japanese adult video studio Shuttle Japan registered the term "ぶっかけ/BUKKAKE" as a trademark (No. 4545137).

We probably owe them money after reading this.

Now everybody go have a shower - not all at once… unless you are into that kind of thing.

Kanpai,
Andrew Joseph
